The birth of DuVernay's daughter was on the 24th day of August 1972, in Long Beach California. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise encouraged her passion for artistic expression and creative thinking. The aunt was on during the night shifts as a nursing assistant to ensure she could follow her passion for art literature and theater in the daytime. After graduating she attended her first year at the University of California Los Angeles where she earned certificates in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay developed an interest in the field of broadcast journalism while a student. She worked as a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being assigned to observe the house of a member of the jury as well as go through their garbage. Her tasks to accomplish left her unsatisfied and, following her decision not to continue in the field of journalism, she was able to move into the industry of publicity. DuVernay was hired right from college to be an intern at an unassuming studio. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was founded in 1999.
