Pointe Claire is a sleepy area on the island of Montreal known as"the West Island. People aren't sure of the meaning of the word and believe it's a distinct Island that lies west of Montreal. The truth is, West Island is actually a whole island. West Island includes the entire area from Lachine to the west. Many times, it is regarded as the birthplace of Amanda Brugel, but while it's true that she was born there it was not her home. Her time in the city was short. Brugel was raised in Courtice in the city of Oshawa, Ontario. Initial goals included becoming a professional dancer. Then, a growing rise meant that she had outgrown her dance partners. According to an article in the Toronto Star, she confessed, "In heels I am 6 feet 1 inches." Once I outgrew the male partners that I had been working with, I quit. The former dancers usually turn to acting, and in the case of Brugel it was the encouragement of her drama instructor at high school which led her in the direction she required. She was a teacher at the time who advised her to pursue a role for the annual school production. She tried it out and got the role of leading female on the show Anne of Green Gables. The show led her to receive an Fine Arts Talent Scholarship at York University where she attended the Theatre Program and earned a Bachelor in Fine Arts degree in 2000.In the more than 20 years that followed, Brugel has landed roles in over 60 shows on the big and small screens. She attracted the most media attention after she got her role as Rita on the award-winning TV series, The Handmaid's Tale
