Gaga had a meeting with the performance artist Lady Starlight during this time; after a performance at the Lollapalooza Festival in 2007 Gaga was signed by Vince Herbert to Streamline Records, an imprint of Interscope Records. Gaga signed a publishing contract with Sony/ATV after having been an apprentice to songwriters for Famous Music Publishing. This led to her being was hired to write music for Britney Spears, as well as labelmates New Kids on the Block, Fergie, and the Pussycat Dolls. At Interscope, singer-songwriter Akon recognized her vocal abilities when she sang a reference vocal for one of his tracks in studio; Akon then convinced Interscope-Geffen-A&M Chairman and CEO Jimmy Iovine to form a joint deal by having her also sign with his own label Kon Live, making her his "franchise player. The album she released first, "The Fame", was released in 2008 to little radio attention. Gaga went on tour throughout Europe and in the US to promote the album. It was not until Gaga had her first hit, "Just Dance", that attention from the public began to become a part of the music industry. Gaga was suffering from a labral tear on her right leg which she secretly nursed for a few weeks in order in order to be able to continue the tour. She was left unable to walk after a show in Toronto and was in extreme discomfort. The tour was canceled.
